As medical technology forges ahead with incomparable speed, we’re left in awe of the accuracy of obsolete procedures that were commonplace just decades ago.
But if we look at present occurrences, we can see the start of an entirely new world of medical treatments and devices that the doctors of yesteryear could not even begin to fathom.
Here are 5 outrageous types of newly invented medical devices that could shape the future.
The hands-free automatic ‘sperm extractor’
According to an article in the Daily Mail online website, hospitals in China are introducing this new device which can extract semen for donors automatically.
According to the country’s social platform, Weibo, the automatic “sperm extractors” were first introduced in a hospital in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province.
The machine, which is coloured pink, grey and white, has a built-in massage pipe in the front that can be adjusted according to the user’s height.
The speed, frequency, amplitude and temperature on the machine are also adjustable to suit the users needs. It sports a small screen on the top which can play “suitable” films for the user aimed at aiding them with the extraction process.
The director of Zhengzhou Central Hospital’s urology department, said the machine was ideally to be used by infertility patients who struggle to retrieve sperm the natural way.
A website selling the machine for $2, 800 per unit, is said to be promoting it, stating: “It can give patients very comfortable feeling.”
The transnasal endoscope
A report in online Inventorspot’s bizarre Japanese medical devices says the display model for a new transnasal endoscope developed by FUJIFILM Medical Co., Ltd. and Fujinon Toshiba ES Systems Co., Ltd. is aimed at showing off the diagnostic device to its best advantage. (An endoscope is “an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body”.)
The new design looks like something straight out of a horror movie with an excruciatingly uncomfortable-looking semi-torso seemingly caught in mid-scream.
Brain Cells From Urine
Listverse reported a bizarre medical procedure in which researchers have turned pee into human brain cells.
At the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health in China, biologists are said to have taken waste cells from urine and modified them with the use of retroviruses to create progenitor cells, which is used in the body as the building blocks for brain cells.
The biggest medical advantage of getting cells from pee is that it’s freely available, and scientists can potentially work on developing neurons derived from the same person, increasing the chance that they’ll be accepted by the body more easily.
Mermaid Self-Propelled Endoscopy Device
Another crazy invention highlighted by Inventorspot is the pill-sized, self-propelled endoscopy device appropriately named The Mermaid. The device was invented by researchers from Ryukoku University and Osaka Medical College in Japan, and was meant to be an all-knowing, all-seeing, alternative to invasive and sometimes uncomfortable endoscopes.
The Mermaid can be swallowed or inserted into the rectum, where-after it begins taking photos at a record rate of 2 per second while the movement of the device is controlled with a joystick… Photoshoot anyone?
Who In their right mind would want to walk around with electric underpants, right? Wrong.
According to Listverse, Electric Underwear really can save thousands of lives.
The reasoning behind this odd medical device is quite simple – when a patient lays in a hospital bed for weeks or months on end, they can develop bed sores;the open wounds formed by bad blood circulation and compressed skin.
And, unbelievably, bed sores could be deadly. Roughly 60,000 people in the US die from bed sores and related infections every year.
Created by the Canadian researcher Sean Dukelow, the electric underpants – christened Smart-E-Pants – produce a tiny electrical charge every ten minutes.
The effect released by the currents is the same as if the patient was moving about on their own – which in turn activates the muscles and increases circulation in that area; this effectively eliminates bed sores.
