What You Need to Know About Contraception

Contraception is a word that sometimes has inappropriate information attached to its definition. Basically it means using a device to prevent pregnancy from occurring. Anything which terminates a pregnancy is a method of abortion. There are numerous methods of contraception available but some better suit the definition than others do. Doing some research will reveal which are better than others.

What is Barrier Contraception?

This is perhaps the oldest known version of contraception available as it was documented having been used in the Ebers Papyrus from Egypt in 1550 B.C. It may also be the most literal translation of the definition of contraception. This is because barrier contraceptives prevent the sperm from entering the uterus. This means an egg will not be fertilized and pregnancy will not be possible.

What Are Some Types of Barrier Contraception?

There are numerous types of this kind of contraception. They consist of male and female condoms, diaphragms, vaginal sponges and cervical caps. Some of these, such as condoms and sponges, are relatively low cost. Condoms are among the easiest forms of any contraception to use. The effectiveness of some barrier contraceptives may vary depending on whether they are used in conjunction with spermicide.

What is Hormonal Contraception?

This method of contraception uses hormones to prevent ovulation in a woman. These hormones may also thicken the mucus of the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. The hormones most frequently used are combined estrogen and progestin. Some types of hormonal contraception are progesterone-only.

What Are Some Types of Hormonal Contraception?

Hormonal contraception can take a couple different forms. There are hormonal intrauterine devices, which are inserted directly into the uterus. Birth control pills (BCPs), subdermal implants, vaginal rings and transdermal patches also all use hormones. Hormonal contraceptives can have adverse health effects on the user which is something that should be considered before using them.

Are There Other Methods?

There are some methods that use the cycle of a woman’s fertility in order to ascertain when it is safe to proceed with intercourse without possibility of pregnancy. Because this can be unreliable it is not as popular a method as some of the others are. Abstinence is also a method of contraception and it is 100 percent effective if practiced the right way.

Contraception can be a confusing subject if you decide to look into the particulars. Analyzing hormones and ovulation cycles can make things more complicated than they need to be. Many methods, such as hormonal pregnancy, have very high rates of protection against pregnancy. Perhaps the method of contraception that most perfectly fits the definition, however, is abstinence because of its absolute effectiveness.
